Take the plunge to boost your fitness

It’s hard not to be enthused when you see and hear Paul Smith, standing on the poolside at Brighton Swimming Centre, talking about swimming and the benefits to health and wellbeing.
Paul, managing director at the centre, which has daily, free sessions for Trust staff, is an inveterate swimmer, plunging into the sea by the Palace Pier every morning at 7am, all year round.
But for us lesser mortals, a regular swim in the pool can have huge health dividends.
“The general health advice is that we should all do 150 minutes of exercise a week and swimming is one of the best ways to get fit and keep fit,” Paul says. “It’s cardiovascular. It’s low impact, so it doesn’t put a strain on your joints. It improves your mood and is a great way to help deal with stress. You come out of the pool feeling energised and ready for the day ahead.”
