April is stress awareness month. Top tips from the experts on how to beat stress suggest we try to: be active; avoid unhealthy habits; have me-time; learn to say no; and accept what we can’t change.
The most important step to feeling better, they say, is to identify the cause of our stress, while the most unhelpful step we can take is to turn to something unhealthy to help us cope, such as smoking or drinking alcohol.
“There's always a solution to a problem," says one leading psychologist. "Not taking control of the situation and doing nothing will only make your problems worse."
His advice to manage stress is: building emotional strength, being in control of your situation, having a good social network and adopting a positive outlook.
It’s advice that’s not always easy to follow, but well worth giving a try.
