How our bodies impact on how we feel

Body image and how we think and feel about our bodies is something that can affect all of us at any age, and it’s the focus of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, 13-19 May.

For too many people their bodies are a source of shame and distress and the campaign urges us to be kinder to our bodies and guard against influences that can lead to a gnawing and debilitating sense of dissatisfaction.

Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation which is running the campaign, says: “From an early age we’re bombarded with images that define what an ‘ideal body’ looks like. Sometimes we face stigma or cruelty as friends or family have used how we look as a way to put us down for a cheap laugh.”

But poor body image can have a hugely detrimental impact on our health and wellbeing. The message this week is that we need to bring about a change that helps us to be kinder to our bodies and healthier in our minds.
